Scott Macfie

Chief of Police

Chief Macfie is a graduate of Kearny High School where he lettered in track. Prior to joining the police force, he was employed by payroll corporation ADP and ran a successful small business in Kearny. D/C Macfie is an avid Jets fan and season ticket holder. He is a repeat finisher of the Tour de Force NY charity bicycle tour having successfully ridden from Washington, D.C. to NYC and from Boston to NYC. Prior to his current command, D/C Macfie held supervisory assignments in the Investigations Division, Directed Patrol/Street Crimes Unit, and the Patrol Division.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2023, followed by a Master’s in Administrative Science from the same institution in 2024. Additionally, he holds a School Safety and Security Certificate from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Paul Bershefski

Deputy Chief

Deputy Chief Bershefski grew up in Harrison and graduated from Queen of Peace High School in 1994. Later, he attended Montclair State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Criminology. His career began in 2005 with the Kearny Police Department, where he worked the 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. patrol shift. Over the years, he achieved several promotions, including becoming a Sergeant in 2012 and a Lieutenant in 2016. In 2018, he was promoted to Captain, commanding the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. B Night Tour. In 2020, he transitioned to his current role, overseeing the B Day Patrol Tour.

He was also a member of the KPD Tactical Services Unit in 2010, received his firearms instructor certificate in 2014, and was named Kearny Policeman of the Year in 2014.
